Lady Hornets Equestrain Upsets South Carolina

Mark your calenders because back on February 1st the Delaware State Lady Hornets Equestrian team went to Waco, Texas and upset 6th ranked South Carolina in equestrian competition.

Here's the break down of the lady hornets 10-6 (6-2 English, Western 4-4 tie) historic victory over South Carolina:
  • On the Flats, Kayla Blair, Frayser Tuttle, and Ashley Butler helped DSU earned a 3-1 victory.
  • Tuttle, Blair, and their teammate Caroline Foltz helped gain DSU a 3-1 victory in the Fences.
  • In the English competition, Delaware State, as a team, received a raw scoring of 587-513.
  • Horsemanship winners Brittany Good & Brittani Collins and Reining winners MacKenzie Trueba & Shelby Bonneville helped DSU claimed a 2-2 tie with South Carolina in Western Horsemanship and Reining
I am very proud of the equestrian team for accomplishing the biggest upset in Delaware State sports history. Throughout the rest of the season, the lady hornets equestrian team will continue to grab national attention by competing against the biggest schools in the country. If this keeps up they could become National Champions in the near future, then again I might get ahead of myself.

Game Changer Help the Hornets Get That Morgan State Monkey Off Their Backs

Since 2008, the Morgan State Bears has found ways to beat DSU at home, on the road, and even in the MEAC Tournament.

On Saturday, it only takes one game changer for the Delaware State Hornets men's basketball team to finally get that Morgan State monkey of their backs once for all.

During the Hornets 60-55 home victory the Hornets had their backs against the walls once again when the defending MEAC champions Morgan State took a 48-41 lead thanks to a 11-3 run midway through the 2nd half.

Then at the 5:39 of the 2nd half mark, anything change. DSU's Terron Stowe and Morgan State's Aric Brooks had both of their legs tangled up after falling out of bounds. Both of them couldnt let go of each other and even not try to get up until Brooks punched Stowe in the ribs. Both players quickly got back up and had stare down showdown when the refree came over to break the two players before even more punches were thrown. That got the crowd and the so was the rest of the hornet players.

Brooks got ejected from the game throwing the punch. Since that little incident, the Hornets starting waking up by hitting their shots, free throws and playing their stingiest defense as the Hornets finished the game on a 14-5 scoring run. Morgan State and head coach Todd Bozerman had no answer for the Hornets and left the game with disappointment and a little bit of frustration.

I'm so proud of the Hornets effort back on Saturday because they didn't quit on themseleves and their coach. They knew they had Morgan State's number the entire time and finally broke through Morgan State's wall to get the victory. I hope the Hornets do the same thing on the road when DSU and Morgan State lock horns again in Baltimore on February 23. Delaware State and Morgan State are offically a rivalry next to Hampton and University of Eastern Shore.

Walker Shooting Lights Out vs FAMU

Last night, during the Hornets 62-57 victory over Florida A&M, I witnessed Casy Walker's shot selection and I noticed that he can rear back and fired shots from all over the place. No wonder he shot five from eight from three point land (eight form 12 from the field overall).

Walker made sure he wasn't going not to have another struggling game like he had last Saturday versus Bethune-Cookman by shooting his shots from the left wing, right wing, mid-range, the perimeter, and in the paint. I was saying to myself all season be on the lookout for Casey Walker for DSU. Walker also made huge statement throwing down the one handed dunk with 2:40 left in the 2nd half to seal the deal before the rest of his Hornet teammates had to make free throws to put the game away for good.

The only crazy part about it is that he is only a freshman with three more years left of his college career to be a basketball player and soon to be leader for coach Greg Jackson Sr.

Hornets Have a Lot of Work to Do After Their 1st Win

It was a playoff type atmosphere at Memorial Hall, and its only the first game of the season. During the Hornets 63-56 victory over Washington Adventist back on November 14, the young Hornets made a lot of mistakes that would've cost DSU the game.

-The Hornets were shooting their shots in a hurry on fast breaks instead of setting up on offense like they always do. Some of their shots were off target and some of their shots didn't even hit the rim. Plus there was also a fastbreak missed dunk by Marques Oliver that made hornet fans riot Memorial Hall and forcing coach Greg Jackson to take him out of the game for a few minutes. No wonder DSU shot 36% from the field and 31% from three point land.

-The Hornets second mistake was turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. The Hornets made 15 turnovers in that game and made coach Jackson scratching his head and looking for answers. Once again they didn't slow down the ball during most of the game.

-Last but not least missing a lot of free throws. DSU made their 1st three free throws in the 1st half, but in the second half the Hornets shot 48% from the free throw line and 54% for the game. Hornets practice your free throws.

This is a very young Hornets team that has a lot of work to do in so little time this season. DSU has to mature every single game in order to compete for a MEAC Championship come March.

Lady Hornets Volleyball Gained Momentum with a Home Winning Streak

With the MEAC Volleyball Tournament coming up on November 17th, the Delaware State Lady Hornets volleyball team wanted to build momentum by trying to win the final four home games of the season.

Guess what, mission accomplished because defeated four MEAC teams in a span of a week.

Lets start with last weekend with November 5 and November 7 when the lady hornets sweep both Morgan State and Coppin State 3-0. Both of those games were season sweep.

Then on Veterans Day, Lady Hornets Hornet had a great battle with Howard University in 3-1 victory thanks to Jessica Croucher's 12 kills.

Last but not least in their home finale on November 12, the Lady Hornets had to win the final two series to beat North Carolina Central 3-2.

Playing in her final game as a DSU Hornet, senior Sarah Wheatcort had her very first career triple double with 12 kills, 17 assists, and 14 digs.

During the lady hornets four game winning streak, DSU has owned opponents in attack percentage 27% to .08%.

Now that the regular season is over the lady hornets will begin the MEAC Tournament as the number two seed when they take on Norfolk State Friday in the quarterfinals. Good luck to the Lady Hornets volleyball team in the MEAC Tournament.

Anthony Glaud Having a Field Day on Senior Day

During the Hornets 29-7 victory over North Carolina Central, Hornets quarterback Anthony Glaud knew he must perform well in his final home game in a DSU uniform because he makes any more turnovers, that will mean that's his Hornet career will end on a very sour note.

So what did Anthony Glaud do to impress Hornets fans, by completing 80% of his passes without committing a turnover.

Glaud was nearly perfect all game long ever since the start of the first possession. Glaud was spreading the wealth to six different Hornet receivers that allowed him to throw for 224 yards and almost half of those yards belong to new favorite target Justin Wilson, who finished with eight catches for 124 yards.

Glaud also made some key running plays that lead that help the Hornets extend their scoring drives.

-During the Hornets opening drive of the game Anthony Glaud used a quarterback sneak from the Eagle one  yard line to scored the hornets first touchdown of the game.

-On the Hornets third possession of the game, Glaud ran for 15 yards and two 1st downs that lead to the Hornets 2nd touchdown of the game.

-On the Hornets 1st possession on the 3rd quarter, Glaud found a big whole to gain 15 yards to the North Carolina 27 yard line that set up the Hornets third touchdown.

Anthony was all over the field for DSU and the Eagles defense had no answer throughout the entire game. Now lets see if Anthony can finished the season on a very strong note and try to win the final two road games of the season versus Norfolk State this Saturday and Howard November 20.

A Disappointing Performance by the Hornets Defense

What is wrong with the Hornets defense? Are they afraid to tackle? Do they keep getting burned by the offensive line? Do they stay on the field too long ? Did they allowed too many big plays for big yards?

All the questions were answered in the Hornets 38-21 home defeat at the hands of South Carolina State.

The Hornets defense were off to a great start in the 1st quarter by forcing South Carolina State to fumble the football twice deep into Hornets territory.

However, from the 2nd quarter through the 4th quarter, the Hornets defense went to sleep in a hurry creating a bunch of gaps for Bulldog quarterback Malcolm Long to throw some great passes to nine different receivers, run for the first downs, also allowed his teammate running back Chris Merrill to run 171 yards on 26 carries and one touchdown.

The Hornets defense has allowed a total of 464 offensive including 253 yards on the ground for a total of 24 points.

I bet the Hornets defensive coordinator Ray Petty is going to have sleepless nights once again just like that Bethune-Cookman game and the Morgan State game last month. What can the hornets defense do to help the Hornets offense? Something tell me they have a lot of work to do throughout the rest of this season and the off-season before the 2011 season returns. Besides next year the Hornets defense is only going to lose three seniors on defense so I won't bash on the Hornets defense too much but they need to find in fill the holes they created in order to create turnovers and less yards.
